Origin and history

The Château du Théret, located in the commune of La Saunière (département de la Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), finds its origins at the end of the fourteenth century, around 1380, for its oldest part. This original building was presented as a large two-storey square building, with mâchicoulis with round road and flanked by three towers, including a square central tower with a spiral staircase. The architectural traces of this medieval period, such as defensive systems, bear witness to its probably strategic role in the region.

During the seventeenth century, around 1645, the castle was modernized to adapt to the aesthetic cannons of the time. An innovative roof, surmounted by a lantern, was added on the stair tower, while two low wings with skylights and turrets (including one with a chapel) were built. The entrance gate, preceded by a bridge over a ditch, marked access to an inner courtyard where there is a 16th century fountain, classified as a historic monument since 1931. These transformations reflect the evolution of the residential and symbolic needs of the local nobility, moving from a fortress to a mansion.

The Château du Théret is also linked to notable historical events, such as the supposed stay of the prince of Condé during the Fronde (mid-seventeenth century), although this information remains to be confirmed by additional sources. In the 20th century, the site was used as a setting for the television film "Les Enfant des Lumières" (2002), with Nathalie Baye, adapting Françoise Chandernagor's work. This cinematic choice highlights the preserved atmosphere of the place, combining architectural heritage and cultural history.

Today, the Château du Théret remains a private property, not open to the public. Its facades and roofs, as well as the Renaissance fountain, have been protected as historical monuments since 1965. The 16th century fountain, located in the courtyard, and a second Renaissance fountain in the park, illustrate the importance attached to the water and the beautification of outdoor spaces during this period. The lack of access to the public, however, limits the in-depth study of its interiors and possible preserved decorations.
