Origin and history

The Château du Tronchet, located in the municipality of Sarthe, is an aristocratic residence built between 1777 and 1783 for the Marquis de Perrochel. The architect in charge of the project, Desprès, originally from Le Mans, designs a building representative of the architectural style of the late eighteenth century. This castle is part of the renovation of the noble residences of the Ancien Régime, marking the social prestige of its sponsor.

Abandoned during the French Revolution, the castle underwent a period of neglect before being restored in 1834. This rescue demonstrates a renewed interest in post-revolutionary architectural heritage. The restoration works then aim to preserve the original characteristics of the building, while adapting to the 19th century uses.

The estate includes, in addition to the castle, communes and a park decorated with factories, typical elements of the aristocratic properties of the period. The ensemble has been protected by an inscription in Historic Monuments since 1997, recognizing its heritage value. The park, with its landscape features, reflects the influence of English-style gardens, popular among the French elite at the end of the 18th century.

The architect Desprès, although little documented, plays a key role in the realization of this project. His work in Le Mans and in the region suggests familiarity with local architectural codes, combining tradition and innovations of the time. The Tronchet Castle remains today a notable example of the Sarthian architectural heritage of the pre-revolutionary period.
