Origin and history

Leybros Castle, mentioned as early as the 14th century, originally belonged to Drugeac's family before passing to the Tournemire by marriage in 1330. The building, composed of a house body, a square tower and a round tower, was renovated in 1573. He then changed hands several times: at the Ferrières de Sauveboeuf in 1633, then at Mr Tyssandier d'Escous in the late eighteenth century, the last known lord. Today, only the square tower, characteristic dungeon with thick walls and mâchicoulis, remains.

The castle illustrates the military architecture of the Haute-Auvergne in the late Middle Ages, with narrow openings and unique rooms per level, with monumental ground chimneys. These defensive and residential elements reflect the needs of local lords, between protection and comfort. The whole, although reduced in turn, retains remarkable original provisions.

Ranked a historic monument in 2002, Leybros Castle bears witness to nobiliary alliances and architectural transformations between the 14th and 18th centuries. Its history is part of that of the seigneurial families of Auvergne, marked by inheritances and adaptations to the political and social developments of the Ancien Régime.
