Origin and history
The Guérin castle, built at the end of the seventeenth century, appeared for the first time on maps in 1684. Originally located in Orly in Val-de-Marne, it owes its name to Auguste-Louis Guérin, mayor of the city and owner of the premises at the end of the 19th century. The estate then includes a landscaped park with artificial river, orangery, cooler and gazebo, now known as Parc George Méliès.
In 1914, the castle was transformed into a detoxification centre under the direction of Dr. Piouffle. A few years later, he became a retirement home run by the cinema mutual, welcoming Georges Méliès from 1932 to 1936. A bust in the park commemorates its stay, while the estate remains an emblematic place linked to the history of cinema.
Since 1946, the town of Orly has owned it. The castle housed the town hall from 1949 to 1996, followed by the municipal arts school. The park, open to the public, was rehabilitated in 2019. The old orchard, transformed into a stadium, illustrates the functional evolution of the site, between historical heritage and contemporary use.
