Origin and history

Château Lastours, also known as Château Dor de Lastours, is a building located in the hamlet of Avits, near Castres, in the Tarn department, in the Occitan region. This monument is the historic seat of the seigneury of Carbes and is known as the birthplace of Elie Dor de Lastours. Although the site was mentioned in the early 18th century, the current building dates back only to the 19th century, reflecting refined bourgeois architecture.

The castle consists of a four-storey rectangular house body, flanked by four round towers, two north and two south. The south facade is particularly worked out, with a balcony supported by a colonnade and a loggia with seven arches in basket handle. The estate includes French-style gardens, a carved fountain and L-shaped outbuildings.

Lastours Castle is associated with the Dor de Lastours family, which acquired it in the 18th century. Joseph Dor de Lastours, a member of this family, bought the seigneury of Carbes from the family of Fregeville. The site thus embodies the history of a local noble lineage, while offering an example of 19th century bourgeois architecture, mixing classical influences and Flemish details.

The gardens, organized in two symmetrical squares, and the sculpted fountain north of the castle, add to the elegance of the estate. To the west, a long L-shaped dependence completes the ensemble, emphasizing the residential and functional character of this castle, which combines history and architectural aesthetics.
