Origin and history
The prioral castle of La Charité-sur-Loire finds its origins in the foundation of a priory by Hugues, Abbé de Cluny, in the 11th century, at the request of the Bishop of Auxerre and the Count of Nevers. Consecrated in 1107, this priory becomes a major step on the way to Compostela, favoring the rise and fortification of the city around the monastery. The first constructions date back to the 12th century, but the most significant countryside took place at the end of the 15th century, with the building of the house of the prior and the portery, then in the 17th and 18th centuries, according to the classic canons of monastic architecture.
In the 16th century, the priory declined with the establishment of the regime of commende and the wars of Religion, La Charité-sur-Loire becoming a Protestant bastion. A fire ravages much of the prioral church and the convent buildings on 31 July 1559. The separation between spiritual and temporal domains, entrusted to lay people, accelerates this decline. In 1790, the activity ceased permanently: the estate was seized and divided into private lots, marking the end of its religious and community role.
Today, the site preserves major remains of its past, including the southern collateral of the prioral church, the capitular hall, the galleries of the cloister, and the house of the 18th century prior. Ranked and protected since the 1970s and 2000, it bears witness to nearly eight centuries of monastic history, between spiritual influence, religious conflicts and architectural transformations. The protected elements also include the soils of historical courtyards and plots, preserving the memory of the ninth to eighteenth centuries.
