Origin and history

The castle of Domaize, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, embodies Renaissance architecture with classical influences. Its centered plan, marked by an inner courtyard and four dangle towers, reflects a balanced design. The major reshuffles of the 17th century introduced ridge vaults, arcades in the stairwell, as well as a refined decor in the tower and the oratory. These alterations enriched the building without altering its original structure, preserving elements such as the false crossovers in the commons, dating from the late 16th or early 17th century.

Inside the castle reveals an exceptional decorative richness. The triple-flyed staircase, decorated with stencil-painted motifs, leads to remarkable pieces: an 18th or 19th-century oratory with stuccos imitating Renaissance lamprequins, ceilings with painted or carved caissons of flowers, and Louis XV decors mixed with 1830s. These are evidence of continuous occupation and stylistic adaptations over time. The castle, classified as a Historic Monument in 1991, protects, among other things, the living rooms with the built ceilings, a coat of arms room, and a museum hall, illustrating its heritage importance.

The location of the castle in Domaize (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, makes it a representative example of the seigneurial residences of this area. Its state of conservation, considered very satisfactory (note 8/10), and the accuracy of its address in the Merimée base (63520 Domaize) underline its territorial anchor. The legal protections cover both the building and its interior decorations, guaranteeing the transmission of this architectural and artistic heritage to future generations.
