Origin and history

Châteaumorand Castle, located 2 km northeast of Saint-Martin-d'Estréaux (Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), finds its origins in the 13th century with the family of Châtelus, vassale des sires de Beaujeu. The land, transmitted by inheritance, passed to the Lévis de Châteaumorand in the 15th century via the marriage of Agnes de Châteaumorand with Bermond de Lévis (1423/1424). The castle, partially rebuilt in the 16th and 18th centuries, became a marquisat in the 17th century after the bequest of Diane de Châteaumorand (1558–1626), wife of Honoré d'Urfé, to his cousin Jean-Claude de Lévis-Charlus.

The lineage of the Lévis-Mirepoix preserved Châteaumorand until the Revolution. Catherine-Agnès de Lévis (1733–83), the last direct heir, married Louis-Marie de Lévis-Léran, guillotine in 1794. Their granddaughter, Delphine de Lévis-Mirepoix (1783–60), transmitted the estate to the Roncherolles, then to the Hamel by marriage. Sold in 1864 to the Count of Dormy, then in 1877 to Sigisbert Maridet, the castle remained in this family until the 20th century. Ranked Historic Monument in 1981 (castle) and 1990 (common), it bears witness to the noble architecture of Bourbonnais.

The commons, dated from the 1st quarter of the 15th century and revised in the 16th and 18th centuries, complete the seigneurial ensemble. The site, linked to literary figures such as Diane de Châteaumorand (potential inspirator of L-Astrée), illustrates the marriage alliances and social changes of the Ancien Régime. Its classification today protects a heritage marked by architectural transformations and dynastic heritages.

The exact address (5371 Morand Castle, 42620 Saint-Martin-d'Estréaux) and its location near Nationale 7 underline its territorial anchor. Although information on its current access (visits, accommodation) is missing from the sources, its history reflects the evolution of a Bourbon seigneury into an emblematic monument of the Loire.
