Heritage classified

The chimney and the remains of a building of the former factory of the Trinity, both in elevation and archeological in the basement, located 12 rue de la Pompe, on Parcel No. 1258, appearing in the cadastre section AT, as shown surrounded by red on the plan annexed to the decree: inscription by order of 16 January 2023

Origin and history

La Trinité's chimney is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to a former sugar factory, a symbol of the local economy linked to the cultivation of sugar cane. Its impressive architecture bears witness to the historic importance of this activity on the island.

Classified as an additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 14, 2002, this chimney was re-listed on January 16, 2023, strengthening its protection. The remains of the adjacent building, as well as the surrounding land, are also protected, highlighting the heritage interest of the site.

Located at 12 rue de la Pompe in Saint-Philippe, this chimney illustrates La Réunion's industrial past. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments preserves this material testimony of Réunion economic history, marked by sugar production since the 19th century.
