Origin and history
The church of the Nativity of Rochefort-sur-Brévon, located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building built between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. It illustrates rural Romanesque architecture, with a Latin cross plan, a unique nave and a vaulted choir in a broken cradle. Its history is marked by major transformations, notably in the 16th century, where Henry II-style murals were added, as well as in the 19th century with the elevation of the bell tower.
The church is distinguished by its false transept bounded by broken arches, typical of the rural shrines of the Romanesque era. The main door, probably from the re-use of materials from an earlier building, bears witness to an older history. The furniture includes 16th-century wall paintings, characteristic of the reign of Henry II, as well as a remarkable building. These artistic and architectural elements reflect the stylistic evolutions and religious practices of their time.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 10 September 2001, the Church of the Nativity is a protected communal heritage. Its inscription covers the entire building, including murals, highlighting its historical and cultural importance. The tower of bell tower, raised in the 19th century, and the sacristy, added to the same period, complete the subsequent developments of this emblematic monument of the Châtillonnais.
