Origin and history
The church of Saint Christophe de Fornols is a Romanesque church located in Campôme, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Although its first written mention dates from 1341, its origin may date back to the 11th century. Today in ruins, it bears witness to a medieval religious heritage typical of the region.
The building is mainly built in local shale, a rock dating from the late Cambrian and early Ordovician. Some elements, such as hercynian granite parts, come from deposits about one kilometre to the northwest. Major collapses in the 20th century partially destroyed the structure.
The church is part of the Romanesque churches of the Pyrénées-Orientales, often linked to rural communities. These buildings served as places of worship, assembly and territorial markers in an area marked by agriculture and livestock. Their architecture reflects the local resources and know-how of the time.
