Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Lapeyrouse, located in Lafrançaise in Tarn-et-Garonne (Occitanie), is a Romano-Byzantin-style religious building. It is surmounted by a dome and lies on a promontory overlooking the Lemboulas valley, 1.5 km northwest of the commune. This site is also a traditional pilgrimage site on Pentecost Monday, attracting faithful for centuries.
The name Lapeyrouse comes from the occitan peirosa ("stone") or Petra alta ("high rock"), evoking the steep terrain on which the church is built. This toponym reflects the local geography, marked by rock formations characteristic of Bas-Quercy.
The history of the church dates back to an ancient dolmen, attested as early as 1065 by a 13th century document. In 1240 it was transferred to the Abbey of Moissac, becoming one of its possessions. The present building is a total reconstruction carried out between 1877 and 1879 by the Toulouse architect Gabriel Bréfeil. The church has been listed as historical monuments since 25 February 1992, and houses a statue of the Virgin with the Child referenced in the Palissy base.
The interior of the church is decorated with paintings made in 1891 by Louis Cazottes, including an imposing Assumption of the Virgin in the abside and the choir. These artistic works add a cultural and spiritual dimension to the monument, testifying to its importance in the local religious heritage.
The Church of Our Lady of Lapeyrouse thus illustrates the medieval heritage and sacred art of Quercy, while embodying popular traditions related to Marian pilgrimages in Occitanie.
