Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-des-Apôtres, located in Villejuif in Val-de-Marne, is a Catholic religious building built within the framework of the Work of the Cardinal's Buildings. Initiated in 1939, it was the 108th realization of this program aimed at meeting the spiritual needs of local populations. Originally, only the choir had been erected, and it was blessed in 1941 by Cardinal Suhard, who emphasized the importance of union and brotherly love for the moral recovery of the community.
In 1967, the church was enlarged to better accommodate the faithful, moving from an annex chapel to a more spacious place of worship. Its architecture is distinguished by a pyramidal roof topped by a bell tower, supported by an apparent structure based on four pillars. The bedside wall is decorated with a painting by Jean-Lambert Stucki, adding an artistic dimension to the building. It now depends on the parish of Saint-Cyr-Sainte-Julitte.
Accessible via Villejuif metro station - Louis Aragon (line 7), the church is located at 52 Louis-Aragon Avenue (formerly Vitry Avenue). This monument illustrates the effort to rebuild and expand places of worship in Île-de-France in the 20th century, in a context of population growth and increased urbanization.
