Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul d'Arronville, located in Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France, is a religious building whose construction begins in the late 11th or early 12th century. The nave, in Romanesque style, is marked by archaic capitals with stylized motifs, representing plants, human heads and animals. These sculptures, though rustic, are considered remarkable for their originality and primitive design. The large arches in the middle of the hanger, not ground, rest on half-columns engaged in square pillars, characteristic of this period.

In the 13th century, the church underwent major changes. The lower sides, the transept crosses and the lateral chapels of the choir are rebuilt and vaulted with warheads in an early Gothic style. The vaults of the nave, although in Gothic style, were only added at the beginning of the sixteenth century, with arch keys decorated with ecu. The choir, rebuilt at the end of the 13th or early 14th century, adopts a radiant Gothic style, illustrated by a triplet at the bedside, whose central bay has a characteristic remplage of this period. The bell tower, damaged perhaps during the Hundred Years War, was completely rebuilt between the 14th and 16th centuries.

The church was classified as a historic monument in 1943, after having undergone restorations in the 19th century, financed by the Baron and Baroness of Frémiot, as evidenced by a commemorative plaque. During World War II, the stained glass windows were destroyed by bombs. Today, the church depends on the parish of Nesles-la-Vallée and regularly hosts Sunday Masses. Its furniture includes classified elements, such as an 18th century bronze chandelier and a 17th century funerary slab.

The building has a sober western facade, marked by a flamboyant third-point portal, although its summary profile suggests a late renovation, perhaps in the 19th century. The foothills and lateral elevations reveal traces of the various construction campaigns, especially Gothic ones. The bedside, with its radiant triplet, and the bell tower, rebuilt without flamboyant style, testify to the historical complexity of this monument.

The church also houses archaeological remains, such as a Merovingian necropolis discovered in 1858 under the building. Until the Revolution, it served as a burial place for the lords of Balincourt. Today, it remains a major architectural testimony of the French Vexin, combining Romanesque and Gothic influences in a preserved rural setting.
