Origin and history
The church Saint-Christophe de Claix, located in the Charente department, is a Romanesque building built in the 12th century. It is distinguished by its unique nave arched in cradle, reinforced by three double arches, and its semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four. The square bell tower, partially disappeared, once rested on a stone dome, showing typical architectural techniques of medieval times.
The history of this church is marked by a notable episode in the sixteenth century: in 1533, Jean Calvin, then fleeing under a name of borrowing, found refuge there with the parish priest Louis du Tillet, his former preceptor. The latter, influenced by reformist ideas, even preached the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation there for several months. This event illustrates the sometimes ambiguous role of religious buildings during the upheavals of the Reformation.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 20 October 1920, the church was restored in 2022, with a budget of 125 000 € tax excl. These interventions aim to preserve its architectural heritage, while emphasizing its local historic importance. The building, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of Claix's rich religious and cultural past.
