Origin and history

The church Sainte-Croix de Viels-Maisons is a religious building located in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 16th century, it embodies the ecclesiastical architecture of the late Renaissance in Picardia. Its nave portal, remarkable in style, was the first element protected by the Historic Monuments in 1928, reflecting its early heritage value.

The building in its entirety was inscribed under the title of the Historic Monuments by an order of 11 June 2024, thus consolidating its preservation. The precise location of the church, at the 1 Passage Henri Guérin in Viels-Maisons, is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 02798. Owned by the commune, it is part of a rural landscape marked by the religious and architectural history of the region.

The 16th century in Picardie was a period of transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era, where parish churches played a central role in community life. These buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for the inhabitants. The religious architecture of the time often reflected the influences of late Gothic and reborn styles, as evidenced by the portal of the Church of St. Croix.
