Origin and history

The Saint-Didier d'Ardoix church, located in the Ardèche department, is a neo-Roman-style building erected in the centre of the village, on the edge of the département 221. Its history dates back to at least 776, the date of Ardoix's first mention in a charter. In the 12th century, it depended on the abbey of Saint-Claude, before becoming a famous pilgrimage site in the 18th century, thanks in particular to the relics reported by the parish priest Chazetier in 1740.

During the Revolution, the church was looted and devastated: its furniture and liturgical objects were burned in the village square, with the exception of the pulpit and confessional, too heavy to move. Closed until 1802, it then reopened to worship as part of the concordat. In the 19th century, redevelopment work took place, as in 1846, and the reliquary was enriched in 1865 by the donations of the father of La Roque, a child of the country.

The 20th century marked major transformations: in 1953, the bell tower was moved during the expansion of the department, and in 1994, the parish of Ardoix became part of an inter-parous ensemble. Today, the church preserves a rich heritage, including stained glass windows, statues, and a reliquary housing parcels of the True Cross and relics of saints, witness to its long spiritual and community history.

The church architecture is characterized by a facade with a side bell tower, three vaulted naves, and a sanctuary decorated with a modern ambon, an altar employing ancient bas-reliefs, and a marble tabernacle. Several objects, such as the baptismal fonts, the pulpit, and a Way of the Cross, are classified in the Palissy inventory. The stained glass windows of the side chapels, representing St. Ostian and the Tower of Oriol, add to his artistic interest.

Saint Didier, patron saint of the church, gives his name to the building, which remains a place of memory with plaques commemorating world wars. The pilgrimages, formerly dedicated to Saint John the Baptist for the protection of children, recall his past role in local devotion.
