Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc in Margny-lès-Compiègne was initiated in 1911 by Abbé Hector Langlois (1852-1929), who wished to honour Jeanne d'Arc with reference to his capture by the Anglo-Bourguignons in 1430, a historical event that occurred nearby. The project was entrusted to architect Henri Bernard (1849-1929), but the work was interrupted by the First World War. Construction, slowed down by financial difficulties, could not resume significantly before the inter-war period.

After the war, the construction site progressed slowly until the architect Henri Colboc (1917-1983) took over from 1958 to 1960. He then completed the choir and the sides, giving the building its final form. The church was finally listed as a Historic Monument in 2016, recognizing its heritage importance and its link to local history.

The building, owned by a diocesan association, illustrates a 20th century religious architecture marked by historical interruptions and successive adaptations. Its term recalls a key episode in the history of France, while anchoring the monument in the memorial landscape of the Hauts-de-France region.
