Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Grosrouvre, located in the Yvelines department in Île-de-France, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. It was radically redesigned in the 17th century, notably by the addition of woodwork dating from 1641, then modified in the early 20th century to accommodate new stained glass windows and murals. These transformations reflect a stylistic evolution marked by successive epochs, while maintaining an initial medieval structure.

The painted decoration of the church, created in 1925 by the painter Pierre-Léon Dusouchet and the parish priest André Pascal, is part of the Atelier d'Art Sacré movement, founded in 1919 by Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallières. This artistic current, born between the two world wars, was intended to renew religious art in France, mixing tradition and modernity. Grosrouvre's paintings are a remarkable local testimony, illustrating this desire to reinvent Christian iconography.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 4 July 1995, the church is now owned by the commune of Grosrouvre. Its classification protects the entire building (cadastre AI 14), including its architectural and decorative elements. The windows, enlarged in the twentieth century, as well as the woodwork of the seventeenth century, coexist with the frescoes of the 1920s, offering an artistic panorama covering nearly nine centuries of religious and local history.

The location of the church, specified as very satisfactory (note 8/10), is attested by its official address: 3 Route de la Surie, 78490 Grosrouvre. This monument, open to the visit, is part of the heritage of the Yvelines and Île-de-France, while remaining anchored in the community life of this rural village. Its history reflects the artistic and social changes of France, from the Middle Ages to the interwar period.
