Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Neuflieux is located in the commune of Neuflieux, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Although its exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources, its name evokes an ancient foundation, linked to Saint Martin, a major figure of Christianity in Gaul. The name Neullieux, attested from 1153 in the form Neuli, then evolving in Neulieu (1365) or Nueflieu (XIVth century), suggests a medieval origin, composed of the new adjective and the term place, which may refer to a monastery, a parish or a new village.
The municipality, now classified as a rural with dispersed habitat, is integrated into Chauny's attraction area, an area of less than 50,000 inhabitants. Its territory, entirely dedicated to agriculture (100% in 2018), reflects a stable land use since the 19th century, as evidenced by the maps of Cassini and the staff. The church, as a central building, probably played a key role in community life, especially before the Revolution, when parishes structured the social and religious life of the countryside.
Local, degraded oceanic climate, and streams such as the Eiréchy ditch may have influenced the building's settlement and maintenance over the centuries. Although the archives are lacking to detail its architecture or transformations, its existence persists in a landscape marked by agricultural activity and a low population density (80 inhabitants in 2023).
