Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin d'Alignan-du-Vent is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Originally built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style, it was first mentioned in 1194 under the name Ecclesia Sancti Martini de Aliniano. Its location, northeast of the Circade, between the streets Plan-de-la-Croix, Maréchal-Foch, of the Armistice and the square Edgard-Alary, distinguishes it from the traditionally central churches in this type of village.
The church underwent major transformations in the 13th and 19th centuries, partially changing its original Romanesque aspect. It is characterized by a four-level façade tower, whose ground floor houses a wooden curved gate decorated with wrought iron hangers. This portal, protected by a porch with columns carved with plant motifs, bears a Latin inscription dated 1689: "Deo Optimo Maximo". The upper floors of the tower house campanary bays and are surmounted by an openworked balustrade.
Classified as a historical monument since 29 July 1998, the church belongs to the commune. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque elements (tour, portal) and later additions, reflecting its evolution over the centuries. The stained glass windows, sculpted capitals and the structure in retreat of the levels of the tower testify to this rich history, while anchoring the building in the heritage landscape of the Herault.
The portal tympanum, adorned with a 1689 cartridge, recalls the baroque modifications made to the building, while the abat-son berries and the stone balustrade illustrate later functional and aesthetic adaptations. The inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history.
