Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Juigné-sur-Sarthe, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, finds its origins in a priory founded in the Middle Ages. Its construction begins in the 4th quarter of the 12th century and continues until the 1st quarter of the 13th century, marking a typical architecture of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic. The bell tower, an emblematic element, is covered with a batière roof and is listed as historic monuments on December 22, 1981, highlighting its heritage value.
Over the centuries, the building underwent several major changes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, bays were redesigned and a northern sacristy was added. Between 1815 and 1825, a southern sacristy was built, while the northern sacristy was converted into a private chapel for the Juigné family. An extension of the nave around 1866 was then destroyed and rebuilt between 1923 and 1924, as evidenced by the dates on the building. The prioral home, formerly adjacent to the church, disappeared after 1828, erasing part of the monastic history of the site.
The Saint-Martin church thus illustrates an architectural and historical stratification, where medieval heritage mixes, modern adaptations and traces of local families. Its bell tower, the only protected element, remains the symbol of a religious and community past anchored in the Sarthois territory. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its central role in the heritage of Juigné-sur-Sarthe, between conservation and evolution.
