Origin and history
The Saint-Martin Church of Mitry-Mory, located in the Seine-et-Marne department in Île-de-France, is a Catholic building dating back to the Middle Ages. Initially a chapel that had become old, it was partially rebuilt and enlarged over the centuries. Still sculpted elements on the west facade suggest a presence from the 13th century, although major parts date from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries.
During the Renaissance, between 1480 and 1515, the nave and south side were entirely rebuilt, as evidenced by a date engraved on a capital. During the reign of Henry II, the north side was added, enriching the architecture of the building. Later, in 1622, under Louis XIII, a massive tower was erected to support the bell tower's arrow, marking a key step in its structural evolution.
The cardinal of Richelieu, after acquiring the land of Mitry and the castle of Bois-le-Vicomte in 1629, played a decisive role in the beautification of the church. In particular, he offered an organ, an element still present and considered a jewel of local heritage. In the 19th century, restorations were carried out, including those initiated by Abbé Meakes in 1898, thus consolidating the building for future generations.
Ranked a historic monument since 18 June 1973, the Saint-Martin church is distinguished by its mixture of medieval, reborn and classical elements. Its organ, of major importance, and its history linked to figures like Richelieu make it an emblematic place of Mitry-Mory. The property of the commune, it remains an architectural and religious testimony of the region.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument and its precise address: 5 Place de l'Église, 77290 Mitry-Mory. Its classification covers the entire building, highlighting its exceptional heritage value.
