Origin and history
The Armenian Apostolic Church Saint Paul and Saint Peter (Sorp-Boghos-Bedros) was built in the early twentieth century in Alfortville, in the Val-de-Marne. It belongs to the local Armenian community, which represented 10 per cent of the population of the city at the time. Its architecture is inspired by medieval Armenian churches, with a unique nave, bays in the heart of the city and a polygonal tower. Under his altar, the land of Armenia was deposited, symbolizing a strong link with the country of origin.
The church was officially built on 10 July 1929 under the direction of architect Armen Hagopian. The ground is blessed on the same day, and the solemn anointing takes place on February 23, 1930, presided over by Bishop Vramchabouh Kibarian. Funding for the project is provided by a rich Armenian resident in Paris, although his identity is not specified in the sources. This place of worship becomes a symbol of Armenian identity in the region.
In 2008, a stele with the Armenian alphabet was erected in front of the church, reinforcing its cultural role. The following year, in February 2009, the Parish Association of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Alfortville and the surrounding area was created to animate and preserve this religious and community heritage.
