Saint Peter's Church (Box C 1, 2): inscription by order of 27 April 1965

Origin and history

Saint-Pierre Church is a Catholic religious building located in Édon, Charente department, New Aquitaine region. Built mainly in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was increased by a later chapel in the 15th century. Its rectangular plane, with a single nave and a semicircular apse, reflects its Romanesque origin, while Gothic elements, such as broken arches, testify to its subsequent transformations. The original vault, destroyed, was replaced by a wooden ceiling, and the square bell tower, adorned with blind arches and geminied bays, dominates the western facade.

The church formerly depended on the diocese of Périgueux and was listed as a historical monument in 1965. Its square of the transept, covered with a dome on trunks, and its three-piece portal on round columns illustrate its architectural importance. The lateral chapel, added at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century, opens with two large arches in broken arch. Property of the municipality of Edon, the building preserves traces of its medieval evolution, mixing Romanesque simplicity and Gothic ornaments.

The site is referenced in the Mérimée base under Insee 16125, with an approximate location in Bourg, 16320 Édon. Although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10), the church remains a testament to the rural religious heritage of the Charente. Its steeple, with its bay-drilled floors in the middle, and its arched apse in cul-de-four, make it an example of the small parish churches of the region, marked by successive changes.
