Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Caulnes, located in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany, is a monument whose history extends mainly between the 15th and 18th centuries. Its most remarkable element is the bell tower, whose base dates from the 15th century, while the upper part was built in the 18th century. This two-storey, square bell tower dominates the building. The church gate houses a statue whose origin could go back to the 13th century or Gothic period, adding an additional historical dimension to this monument.
The church's windows and skylights, 14 in number, were made by the master glassmaker Hubert de Sainte-Marie, bringing an artistic and luminous touch to the interior of the building. The church was partially inscribed as historical monuments on 6 July 1925, specifically concerning its bell tower. Among the movable objects protected are a statue of Saint Joseph and a chalice, bearing witness to the heritage and religious richness of the place.
The history of Saint Peter's Church is also marked by several construction and reconstruction campaigns. The first campaign, dating from the late 15th or 16th century, saw the construction of the south side of the choir as well as the north, south and west doors. In 1686, the south side was partially rebuilt, as evidenced by an inscription mentioning the names of Mr. Agrohan and Mr. I. Langlois, treasurers, as well as V. Bignon. The bell tower was erected in 1769, as indicated by a date on the structure. Finally, the nave and sacristy were rebuilt in the 20th century, thus complementing the current aspect of the building.
Saint Peter's Church of Caulnes, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is a composite building reflecting architectural and artistic evolutions over centuries. Its location in Caulnes, a commune in the country of Saint-Brieuc, makes it a central element of Breton religious heritage. The partial protection it has enjoyed since 1925 underscores its historical and cultural importance in the region.
Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Caulnes and remains a place of worship and visit, although information about its accessibility or its possible ancillary functions (room rental, guest rooms) is not specified in the available sources. Its architecture, combining Gothic and classical elements, as well as its glass windows and protected furniture, make it an emblematic monument of the Côtes-d'Armor.
