Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet is a Romanesque church in Fenouillet, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. This monument bears witness to an ancient religious occupation, marked by the foundation of St Peter's Abbey around 1006 by Bernard Taillefer, Count of Besalú and Lord of Fenouillèdes. This abbey, whose first abbey was Wadallus, was a major spiritual and administrative centre in the region.
The Priory of the Tour de Trignac, founded by Wadallus and located near the present-day Latour-de-France, was attached to the Abbey of Fenouillet. During the 12th century, the abbey evolved to become the archdiocese of Fenouillet, reflecting the ecclesiastical and political transformations of the region. The current ruins recall this rich and complex medieval history.
Although little detailed information remains about its architecture or its daily life, Saint Peter's church illustrates the importance of religious establishments in the territorial and social organization of Fenouillèdes in the Middle Ages. These monuments served as places of worship, but also as economic and cultural centres for local communities, often under the influence of the lords and Counts of the region.
