Origin and history

Saint Anne's Church in Séneujols, mentioned before 1179, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its initial structure consists of four spans, a chorus span and an apse, with two Romanesque spans covered in cradle. These primitive elements testify to its medieval anchor, while its bell tower overlooks a large span characteristic of this period.

In the 15th century, the church underwent a significant prolongation with the addition of two vaulted bays of warheads, thus modifying the original unique nave. The apse is also prolonged, causing the creation of warheads in the nave. This transformation reflects the architectural evolution towards the late Gothic, while preserving Romanesque elements. Lateral chapels, added as in many regional churches, enrich the interior space.

The southern side chapel is distinguished by its liernes, thirdons and a classic arcade, illustrating the transition between flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance. The gallery houses a rare set of objects linked to a brotherhood of penitents (croix, sceptres, crowns of thorns), highlighting the spiritual and community role of the building. The facade pediment, probably added in the 19th century, marks a last architectural change.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of October 9, 1969, Sainte-Anne Church embodies nearly nine centuries of religious and architectural history. Its official protection recognizes its heritage value, mixing Romanesque heritage, Gothic innovations and traces of local devotional practices. The communal property now ensures its preservation for future generations.
