Origin and history
The Sainte-Bernadette church was built in Chaville, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, Île-de-France. This project is part of the work of the Cardinal's Buildings, an initiative to erect places of worship in areas of growing population. It replaced a temporary chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph, originally located on Vélizy-le-Bas. The building was erected rue du Pavé-de-Meudon, marking a stage in the religious development of the commune.
The consecration of the church took place on 17 June 1962, under the chairmanship of Monsignor Renard, then bishop of Versailles. This moment officially marked his entry into office as a place of Catholic worship. In 2011, an access elevator was installed, improving its accessibility for the faithful and visitors.
On the occasion of the jubilee of the 60th anniversary of his consecration, in 2023, relics of Saint Bernadette were installed there, strengthening his link with Marian spirituality. This celebration was marked by the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio in France, Celestino Migliore, who presided over the Sacrament of the Sick on Sunday, February 12, 2023, stressing the continued importance of the Church in local religious life.
The church of Sainte-Bernadette is part of a diverse religious landscape in Chaville, where several places of worship coexist, including the former church of Notre-Dame de Chaville and the Armenian Apostolic Church of Saint-Grégoire-l'Iluminator. Its history thus reflects the demographic and spiritual evolutions of the region in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
