Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Julie de Nonza, located in the Corsican village of the same name, was built in the 17th century, and then thoroughly redesigned in the 18th century. At that time, the churches of Corsica, often modest, served as central places of worship for rural communities organized around agriculture, livestock and fisheries. Their architecture reflected local resources and genoese influences, still present on the island.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the building was in poor condition, requiring interventions whose details are not specified in the sources. The main façade, characteristic of the era, is surmounted by a triangular pediment, while the interior consists of a central vaulted nave flanked by two collaterals. The flat bedside, typical of Corsican churches, and the arches falling on pilasters testify to a sober but functional architecture.
Classified Historic Monument by decree of 6 December 1984, the church of Sainte-Julie today belongs to the municipality of Nonza. Its inscription in the Mérimée base underlines its heritage importance, although the sources do not mention any remarkable furniture or interior decorations. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 8/10), allows to consider a visit within the framework of the Corsican religious heritage.
