Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Marie-du-Plant finds its origins in a first chapel, named Sainte-Marie Libératrice du Plant, erected in 1908 in Champigny-sur-Marne. This original building was blessed on 7 March 1909 by Cardinal Léon Amette, then archbishop of Paris. Although modest, this chapel marked the beginning of a structured religious presence in this growing urban area at the dawn of the twentieth century.
The present, much larger building was built in 1935 to replace the original chapel. Its architecture is distinguished by a portal adorned with a statue under an arch in the middle of a pit and an independent bell tower, typical of parish churches of the inter-war period. The semi-abstract stained-glass windows illustrate scenes from the New Testament, reflecting a desire to combine artistic modernity and Christian tradition.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the church underwent important works: parish premises were added to meet the needs of the community, and the crypt, partially buried under the choir, was restored. These developments demonstrate the continuous adaptation of the site to liturgical and social developments, while preserving its architectural and spiritual heritage.
