Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marguerite was mentioned for the first time in 1264, although it was not then the parish church of Roquebrune, the role of Sainte-Marie de Ribaccio. It was only in the 16th century, after the ruin of the latter, that Sainte-Marguerite became the parish church around 1570. The building underwent a first major restoration between 1610 and 1620, followed by a second in the 18th century, which gave it its characteristic Baroque style.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the church deteriorated again, requiring an extensive restoration project carried out between 1880 and 1883 by canon Grana. The contemporary painted decorations, made by the painter Gastaldi (or Bistolfi according to sources), date from this period. The church, with its bell tower, calade court and outbuildings, has been fully protected since a decree of inscription in 2022.

Located on Rue de l'Eglise in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, it belongs to the commune and bears witness to the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, medieval references to Baroque transformations and modern restorations.
