Church, including the remains of the former building and the closing wall of the presbytery (Box AB 212): inscription by order of 12 August 1994

Origin and history

The Saint-Maurice parish church, located in Pélissanne in the Bouches-du-Rhône, is a religious building built in the first half of the 19th century. It has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1994, including its earlier remains and the closing wall of the presbytery. This building reflects the religious architecture of its time, marked by neoclassical influences and a desire to modernize places of worship after the French Revolution.

The location of the church at 36 Rue de la Liberté is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory in 1994 underscores its heritage importance, particularly for the preservation of the remains of the old building. The municipality of Pélissanne owns it, and the church plays a central role in local life, both religiously and culturally.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, to which Pélissanne belongs, experienced a period of urban and religious transformation in the 19th century. Parish churches, like Saint-Maurice, served as gathering points for communities, while embodying the architectural and social changes of the time. Their construction often met needs for renovation or expansion of existing places of worship, in a context of population growth and the reaffirmation of local identity.
