Origin and history
The Saint-Baudile church of Neuilly-sur-Marne, located in Seine-Saint-Denis, is an early example of the Gothic style in Île-de-France. Its construction began in 1198 under the impetus of the parish priest Foulques, originally from the village. He preached there to mobilize the fourth crusade on behalf of Pope Innocent III. The building remains unfinished at his death in 1202, as evidenced by the windows walled above the old sacristy, never with stained glass windows.
Ranked a historic monument in 1913, the church retains remarkable 13th century elements, such as carved capitals and a statue of the Virgin. It belongs to the parish of Neuilly-sur-Marne, in the diocese of Saint-Denis. Its architecture reflects the transition between Romanesque art and the nascent Gothic, characteristic of the Franciscan churches of this period.
Dedicated to Saint Baudile, martyr of the third century, the church illustrates the central role of places of worship in medieval life, both as a religious space and as a symbol of local power. Its history is linked to that of the fourth crusade, although its completion was interrupted by the death of its initiator. Today, it remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the region.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) specify that the building is located 3 Place du Chanoine Heroux, in the commune of Neuilly-sur-Marne (INSEE code 93050). The property belongs to the commune, and the church is always open to worship within the local parish.
