Origin and history

The church of Saint-Médard de Cheviré-le-Rouge is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. It dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, although later changes marked its architecture. The bell tower, the only vestige of the 12th century, bears witness to its medieval origin, while the choir, built in the 13th century, reflects the stylistic evolution of the era.

The nave was entirely rebuilt between 1854 and 1857 by architects Alfred Edouard Heulin and Bibard, illustrating a major intervention in the 19th century. In 1889 the sacristy was added under the direction of Auguste Beignet. The building was classified as historical monuments in 1966, protecting the choir and bell tower, which are the oldest and most remarkable elements of the site.

The church of Saint-Médard is owned by the municipality and is part of the religious and architectural heritage of Anjou. Its history reflects both medieval construction techniques and modern restorations, typical of French rural churches. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its local importance and heritage ranking.
