Saint-Symphorian Church: Order of 15 June 1939
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Symphorien de Treigny, located in the Yonne department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is an emblematic Gothic building of the 15th century. Nicknamed the "Cathedral de la Puisaye", it is distinguished by its imposing architecture and its historical importance in the region. The building was classified as historic monuments on June 15, 1939, recognizing its exceptional heritage value.
The precise location of the church is 1 Rue de l'Église, 89520 Treigny, in the commune of Treigny-Perreuse-Sainte-Colombe. It belongs to the municipality and is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 89420. Although the sources mention a precise location considered "a priori satisfactory", the church remains a central landmark in the local landscape.
The Church of Saint-Symphorian embodies the religious and social role of religious buildings in Burgundy in the 15th century. At that time, churches served not only as places of prayer, but also as community centres for gatherings, markets and local decisions. Their construction often reflected the prosperity and collective organization of the villages, while marking the architectural and spiritual landscape of the region.
