Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de Lachapelle-sous-Gerberoy is a modest religious building, typical of the 11th and 12th century buildings. Despite its small dimensions, it is uniquely shaped by a steeple tower made of stone, an architectural element not common for churches of this size. Its western porch, added later, remains a rare example of this type of development, although partially preserved.

The 14th century wall paintings, located in the North Chapel, are the most remarkable element of the monument. These frescoes with figurative scenes, of exceptional quality and scope in the Oise department, testify to the artistic and religious importance of the building at this time. Their state of conservation makes it a valuable visual heritage for the study of regional medieval art.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 28 March 2011 (amended on 10 August 2011), the church is now owned by the municipality. Its protection includes the entire building (Cadastre B 56), highlighting its architectural and pictorial heritage value. The location of the building, at 7 Rue de l'Eglise in Lachapelle-sous-Gerberoy, is documented with a precision considered very satisfactory (note 8/10).
