Origin and history
The church of Saint-Aré de Decize is dedicated to Saint Are, bishop of Nevers (548-558), whose legend tells that his remains, placed in a boat on the Loire, failed in Decize after having climbed the river. This miracle founded local worship and justified the construction of a place of veneration on this site, perhaps previously occupied by a Gallo-Roman temple. The crypt, dug around a cave, housed a miraculous statue of the Virgin, Our Lady of the Underworld, an object of devotion for centuries.
The oldest still visible parts — the choir and the crypt — date from the 11th and 12th centuries, bearing witness to Romanesque architecture. In the 15th and 19th centuries, the church was thoroughly remodeled, especially after the collapse in 1842 of the walls of the nearby castle, which destroyed the nave, part of the transept and several chapels. This accident marked a turning point in its history, leading to partial reconstructions. The choir and crypt were classified in 1875, while the rest of the building was inscribed in 1991.
The church retains a remarkable furniture heritage, especially in its crypt: a 16th century Renaissance altarpiece depicting biblical saynets, a 15th century statue of the Virgin, or a 17th century funeral plaque dedicated to Jacques Salonnier, king's adviser. Among the liturgical objects are two bronze beanitors decorated with carved medallions, as well as 18 19th-century stalls. These elements illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of the site, marked by accidental destruction, as in 2020, when a vehicle entered the building before a mass, damaging the gate and organ.
The location of the church, between Loire and Vieille Loire in the old centre of Decize (Nevere), highlights its anchoring in a river and historical landscape. Its architecture thus combines chronological stratas, from legendary origins in the 7th century to modern restorations, gothic and neo-gothic phases. The site remains an active place of worship, while constituting a major testimony of Burgundy religious heritage.
