Origin and history
The church of Saint-Michel de Jarnages, located in the Creuse department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. It was partially redesigned in the 14th century, in particular to strengthen its defensive capacity against the threats of the Big Companies. Its flat bedside, equipped with a three-mâchicoulis scald decorated with trilobed arches, bears witness to this military adaptation. The monument also preserves a western portal, whose oral tradition attributes the origin to the former abbey of the Ternes de Pionnat, destroyed at the end of the eighteenth century and whose elements were allegedly reused.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 12 November 1930, the church illustrates the architectural and defensive evolution of religious buildings in Limousin. His initial plan included two flat-bed chapels on the arms of the transept, a typical arrangement of the Romanesque churches of the region. Official protection underscores its heritage value, both for its history and for its unique architectural features, such as the defensive stick and the raised gate.
The building is now owned by the municipality of Jarnages and remains a significant testimony of local medieval history. Its location, in the heart of the village and close to the 990 departmental road, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the region. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its importance in the religious and architectural heritage of the Creuse.
