Origin and history
Saint-Pallais Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Saint-Palais-de-Phiolin, Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. Built in the twelfth century, it is dedicated to St.Pallais, bishop of Saintes in the sixth century. Its architecture is distinguished by a unique nave of three spans, separated by columns and counter-pillars, as well as a vaulted cradle sanctuary and a cul-de-four apse. The western façade has a four-archivot portal decorated with carved joint covers, while the square bell tower, rebuilt in 1860, dominates the whole.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 15 November 1913, the church is owned by the municipality. Its apsal base, adorned with a series of rattles supported by a ground capital colonnade, bears witness to its Romanesque heritage. The facade, with its corner pilasters and its four arched colonnade on the first floor, reflects a sober but elaborate architecture, typical of the rural churches of the region.
The building, although partially modified in the 19th century (especially by the reconstruction of the bell tower), retains significant medieval elements. Its ranking in 1913 underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its historical role in the local religious landscape. No information is available on its current use (visits, cults, etc.), but its state of conservation seems satisfactory according to the sources consulted.
