Origin and history
The church of St.Gildas, located in the commune of Pénestin (Morbihan), is a Catholic religious building built in 1880 according to the canons of Gothic architecture. It replaces an older church, once implanted in the present cemetery, and also dedicated to Saint Gildas, patron saint of the parish. Its initial location, a pre called "Billy", marks a break with local tradition.
The church is distinguished by its triangular porch, atypical in the region, and contains several remarkable elements: statues (including that of St Gildas), capitals decorated with floral motifs, and stained glass windows illustrating the life of Christ or that of the saint. The two arms of the transept each house a 19th century wooden altar, while the choir has a panel at the bottom of the wall.
This place of worship embodies both spiritual continuity, with devotion to St Gildas, and architectural modernity for the time. Its furniture and decorations reflect 19th-century craftsmanship, especially in wood and stained glass. The church is thus part of the religious and heritage landscape of Morbihan, between tradition and stylistic renewal.
