Origin and history
The Saint-Martin d'Ahetze church, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, is a building built in part in the 16th century. It is dedicated to Saint Martin and has been listed as a historical monument since 1973. As a point of passage for the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela, it contains remarkable elements such as a procession cross of the 15th century, decorated with bells, which was associated with accusations of witchcraft in 1609 by the councillor of Lancre. Its interior includes an 18th-century altarpiece, a statue of St James as a pilgrim, and a Virgin of the Assumption, all made of wood.
The architecture of the church is characterized by a single nave extended by a circular apse, flanked by a narrow sacristy. Three floors of baluster stands, supported by carved beams, surround the nave. The west façade is marked by a bell tower-wall, while the main door, dated 1659, is inscribed under a full arch adorned with a niche housing a statue of the Virgin. Nearby, the ostaleria once welcomed pilgrims. The adjacent cemetery preserves an ancient discoidal stele, typical of the Basque region.
The church is also linked to local history by its role in witchcraft trials of the early seventeenth century. The procession cross, considered "diabolic" in 1609, illustrates the religious tensions of the time. Another stele of Ahetze is now on display at the Basque Museum in Bayonne, highlighting the heritage importance of the site. The parish, mentioned in 1083, bears witness to an ancient occupation and a cultural continuity in this region of the Basque Country.
