Origin and history

The church of the Assumption of Vincelles is a religious building located in the commune of Vincelles, in the department of Yonne, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 13th century, it is a typical example of medieval religious architecture in this region. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, by order of 11 January 1941, bears witness to its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this architectural and cultural heritage.

In the 13th century, churches played a central role in the life of Burgundy rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, where social, political and religious events took place. In this context, the church of Vincelles, like many others in the region, was probably a structuring element of local life, reflecting both faith and collective organization of the time.

The religious buildings of this period were often built or embellished by the donations of local lords or faithful, although the sources available do not specify the exact sponsors of this church.
