Origin and history
The Hagenthal-le-Bas Israelite Cemetery is a historical monument located in the Upper Rhine department, in the Greater East Region. Founded in the middle of the 18th century, it is located in the place called im Gucker, near the town. This cemetery, whose oldest burials date back to this period, reflects the ancient settlement of a Jewish community in this border region of Alsace.
The building was officially listed as historic monuments by order of 4 November 1992. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both architecturally and historically. Most of the steles and funerary monuments on the site date from the 19th century, although the cemetery itself was earlier. The management of the place is now the responsibility of the municipality of Hagenthal-le-Bas, which ensures its preservation.
