13th Century Portal: Registration by Order of 9 November 1926

Origin and history

Valcabrère Cemetery is a historic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 13th century, it is mainly known for its portal, which is the only protected element registered as Historical Monuments since 1926. This portal, typical of medieval architecture, bears witness to the importance of burial places in Occitan villages at that time, often associated with churches or community centres.

The location of the cemetery, although documented in the Mérimée base with an approximate address (4 Saint-Just, 31510 Valcabrère), remains imprecise according to modern criteria, with a note of 5/10 for the quality of its geolocation. Owned by the municipality, this site illustrates the central role of cemeteries in the social and religious organization of medieval villages, where they served both as a place of memory and as a gathering place. No additional information is available on any contemporary uses, such as visits or rentals.

The protection of the portal by decree of 9 November 1926 underscores its heritage value, although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not provide details of its current iconography or conservation status. This ranking reflects a desire to preserve the medieval remains in a region marked by a rich history, particularly linked to the influence of the Counts of Toulouse and the rural life in Occitanie. No mention shall be made of other architectural elements or of specific historical events associated with this cemetery.
