Origin and history
The funeral cippe of La Roque-sur-Cèze is a vestige of the Gallo-Roman period, typical of memorials erected to honor the deceased. Located in the commune of La Roque-sur-Cèze (Gard), it bears witness to funeral practices and Roman influence in this region during ancient times. This type of monument, often carved and inscribed, was used to mark the graves and perpetuate the memory of the disappeared.
Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 18 December 1912, this cippe belongs today to the commune. Although its precise location is approximate (noted as very bad in the databases), it remains a protected heritage element, reflecting the importance of Gallo-Roman archaeological sites in Occitanie. These monuments also provided a visual landmark in the necropolises, while illustrating the local beliefs and crafts of the time.
