Origin and history
The citadel of Verfeil is a 15th century historical monument, characterized by brick architecture evoking Catalonia. Its flat walls, raised above a glacis, are pierced by rare windows in the upper part. This building is part of the remains of a fortified complex of which the nearby church was a bastion. Its origin dates back to the Albigois wars, during which time a first castle already existed on the site.
In 1214 Simon de Montfort offered this castle to the bishop of Toulouse, probably identifiable with the present citadel. It was reshaped by Archbishop Pierre Dumoulin between 1439 and 1451, giving it its present form. The exterior facades West, North and East have been protected since 1952, and the monument now belongs to the municipality of Verfeil.
The location of the citadel in Verfeil in Haute-Garonne is approximate, with an accuracy considered mediocre (5/10). The site, although partially preserved, does not have clear information on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodation).
