Origin and history

The Cité Vaudoit, located in Clermont-Ferrand in Puy-de-Dôme, is a remarkable civil architectural complex built during the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This monument consists of three main buildings: a turret building, old stables surrounded by gardens and fountains, and a street building with a covered passage on the ground floor. These elements are connected by a private passage through two streets, highlighting the ingenuity of its urban development.

The architect Tachet is awarded as master of the project, while the stained glass windows are signed by the glassmaker Gaudin. The turret building houses an exceptional living room on the first floor, where walls, doors and ceilings are decorated with Japanese-style paintings. These sets represent plant motifs (cherries, bamboos), birds and dragons, showing a rare exotic artistic influence for the time. This living room, as well as the stairwell and its windows, have been protected since 1993.

Considered the most beautiful civil ensemble of the 19th century, the Cité Vaudoit combines functionality and aesthetics. Its covered passage, initial gardens and interior decorations make it a unique example of the local architectural heritage. The partial inscription for the Historical Monuments in 1993 helped preserve these emblematic elements, including the painted salon and the glass windows, attributed to renowned artisans.

The location of Vaudoit City, between Gaultier-de-Biauzat Street and Vaudoit City itself, reflects a harmonious integration into the urban fabric of Clermont-Ferrand. Although some parts, such as stables and their gardens, may have evolved, the whole remains stylistic and historical. Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its heritage importance in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
