Origin and history
The Cognons de Civaux tower is a square dungeon of modest dimensions (10 x 10 meters), probably dating back to the 11th century, during the Romanesque period. Its name derives from the family of the Conienses, presumed builders of the building. Although modest in size for a dungeon, its structure reflects the defensive construction techniques of the medieval era, with thick walls and compact shape.
In the 15th century, changes were made, including the addition of windows and chimneys, partially adapting the building to the residential needs of the time. The 19th century saw new additions, although their exact nature is not specified in the available sources. The tower has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1927, reflecting its heritage importance.
Located in the department of Vienna, New Aquitaine, the Cognons Tower illustrates the architectural evolution of medieval dungeons, moving from a purely defensive function to a more mixed use. Its inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1927 allowed its preservation, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10).
