Origin and history

Château Civet is an old house built in 1870 in Saint-Maximin, in the department of Oise. It belonged to the Civet family, owner and operator of local limestone quarries, a major economic activity for the region for centuries. This 19th-century bourgeois style castle reflects the prosperity associated with the exploitation of the town's natural resources.

The Château Civet estate now houses the Solange-Cassel ITEP, a psycho-pedagogical institute founded in 1934. This place, initially a family residence, illustrates the evolution of the uses of historic buildings, from a private function to a social and educational role. The quarries of Saint-Maximin, exploited by the Civet family, have also provided the stone used for Parisian monuments and the clay of the courts of Roland-Garros since 1928.

Saint-Maximin, located in Hauts-de-France, is marked by its industrial heritage linked to stone. Quarries, still in operation, export their production to the United States and Asia. The castle, although less well known than other local monuments such as the Saint-Maximin church, bears witness to the economic and social history of the municipality, between mining and educational engagement.
